Behind the Scenes: Modern Man

Last week, I had a great time taking part on behalf of The Co-Op for the Modern Man show presented by Rockit Ranch. It included some special guest models, and met some of my favorite bloggers, brands, and personalities back stage.

Lately I've been mentioning a project I'm working on with the help of the WNBA team, Chicago Sky.  In order to support women's cancer awareness, I was among a handful of designers to participate in designing evening wear for the athletes.

With the charity of choice being A Silver Lining Foundation, we were charged with designing a silver themed evening gown.

All the athletes were great sports, getting dolled up and for a great cause.

 I was paired with the newest addition to the team, Shay Murphy.  She just arrived in Chicago a couple of weeks ago, by way of her last WNBA team in Indianapolis.

The one of a kind dress I designed for Shay, along with all other silver themed dresses from the event, is being auctioned off by the Chicago Sky to benefit A Silver Lining Foundation.

I'll hanging out at the next Chicago Sky game again tomorrow meeting fans, so if you're in the area and want to meet the rest of the designers and see the dresses and the final images from the shoot in person, come out and say hi.

A New View

It's time for new glasses, and boy am I excited. And by excited, I mean a bit stressed. After all, it's the only accessory that lives on your face.

I finally decided on a pair (in tortoise) that will work as a great funky pair for casual dress, as well as look quite smart while tempering more dressed up apparel. I'm thinking Diane Keaton meets Woody Allen meets the new Chanel meets the new Jay-Z meets Steve Urkel meets the neighborhood hipster that you love to hate.

Miley, Max, and The Mart

And we're back! After a great vacation and time well spent with the fam, I'm glad to be back and working on some great projects on some vintage pieces, design, and special projects for the new apartment. Lots of great things to come soon enough.


Within the past week, the official launch of the Miley Cyrus/Max Azria/Wal-Mart collaboration took place. Yes, you read correctly. Yes, I too was shocked when first hearing about this. I suppose from a business standpoint Max will do very well with this line with all the Miley superfans out there. But Max, what about your core customer?

Max, I feel like a bad friend because I just cannot support this decision. Not one bit.


So what do you even get when you put these 3 together? Tops, graphic tees, leggings, and more all for under $20. I'm sure the moms of Hannah fans will love the price point as well for Back to School. This will surely be a big win for Wal-Mart.

The real question is: will you secretly be shopping Miley Cyrus & Max Azria?

Summer Boots - Making Them Lovely

I'm usually not one to look to celebrities for style inspiration [um, openly]. But lately I've been so impressed by the way Alexa Chung can piece together an outfit and have that barely-trying-but-spot-on thing going on. It's the kind of look that's a little nerdy, a little rocker, and appropriately off-beat.

As the new daytime talk show host on MTV, today Alexa sported a look that I've been a fan of for a few summers now: the summertime short boot. I know this seems a bit like an oxymoron, but when paired with a girly dress or with shorts and a more flowing top, it really is the kind of juxtaposition that I need sometimes.

ShopBop currently has a styling guide for this look with jersey dresses and short cowboy boots.

The key: shorter boots, short-ish hem lines, and contrasting textures.

With some well-chosen layers, this look will transition well into the cooler months to come.
